CO2 emission reduction

Providing a renewed impetus to CO2 reduction initiatives in road haulage, the chairmen of GEFCO and STEF-TFE signed a charter of voluntary commitments with the Paris Region Prefecture and ADEME

Yves Fargues, GEFCO’s Chairman and CEO, and Francis Lemor, STEF-TFE’s Chairman and CEO signed on December 9 at the Ile-de-France Prefecture a Charter outlining voluntary commitments to reduce CO2 emissions.

This charter was drawn by the Ministry for Transportation, Equipment, Tourism and Sea and the professional organisations FNTR et TLF, working with the ADEME (Agence de l'Environnement et de la Maîtrise de l'Energie), the agency for environmental protection and energy savings. These two companies are the first ones to sign in Ile-de-France.

By signing this charter, GEFCO and STEF-TFE committed to a sustainable development. They will undertake to significantly reduce their road haulage’s CO2 emissions for the 2010-2012 period. They set themselves specific targets for fuel consumption, fleet modernisation and the optimization of their fleet use.

CO2 emission reductions for the 2010-2012 period:
•    GEFCO’s commitment: minus 4%
•    STEF-TFE’s commitment: minus 7%

With the help of our research departments, we constantly design and update our transport and logistics schemes to optimize our cost/quality/CO2 ratio”, Yves Largues said on this occasion. “We increasingly favour alternatives to road transport. We use them 25% of the time during the year, compared to a 17% average for the sector. Out of 3,2 million cars transported by us in 2008, one million went by sea and 800.000 by rail”.

Francis Lemor said: “As the Paris region of Ile-de-France is the largest regional market for food in Europe, it is also the region where fresh food products road haulage is the most intensive. About 300 STEF-TFE refrigerated trucks enter or leave the region area every day to bring fresh food to millions of consumers. However, the impact of perishable food stuff road transport on the environment is moderated by the fact that the average distance covered does not exceed 180 km (120 miles)”.
